All-new Lotus model due next year - 29 May 2019 02:22

Tags:

All future Lotus models will eventually use electrification, said Popham, but in exactly what format has yet to be decided. “The focus for now is on replacing the products we’ve got today – the sports cars,” he said. “In a long time, Lotus has not had sight of what is required. You need a longterm plan, a product plan and a business plan locked down with investment. We have that plan locked in.”

Lotus will also look to leverage the “huge opportunity” it has from being part of such a large and well-resourced group as Geely, said Popham. This includes “design, engineering and manufacturing opportunities” and the potential for shared architectures for future models beyond sports cars, as well as investigating the future of its engine deal with Toyota, which continues harmoniously for now.

On the finances involved with Geely, Popham said: “We’re not talking tens or hundreds of millions, but billions.”

On the wider role Geely can play, he said: “All conceptual work and product planning management will sit at Lotus, but we can and will sub-contract packages back into Geely.

They have lots of technology capabilities, a design studio in Coventry, engineers in Sweden, Germany and China. We employed 150 engineers last year and will employ more this year while also using the resource in Geely.”

Early development work has now started on the new sports car architecture, which may not necessarily retain its current bonded and extruded aluminium base if a better option is available. It will be developed to meet regulations in China and North America from the beginning.

The Norfolk-based company is already expanding its Hethel headquarters, with plans approved for a new customer experience centre and museum. Lotus sold 1630 cars last year, but Popham said the capacity was around 5000. Hethel will remain the home of Lotus sports cars with associated investments to improve the facilities. The manufacture of future models, such as SUVs, will take place elsewhere.

Beyond sports cars, Popham said Lotus could enter “a number” of segments so long as all of its models retained the brand’s core DNA. He cited Porsche as a good example of how to grow. “Our DNA of driving dynamics, performance and lack of weight mean different things in different segments, but we’ll be renowned for them in the segments we’re in,” he said.

Popham added that future sports car models must take less time to make and be cheaper and more repeatable to produce as “the hours of build are too high”, while too many parts are used and their cost is also “too high”. This is the result of having architectures that have stayed in production for so long and a reason for Lotus’s inconsistent quality.

Project KP30: Racer86 x Compomotive – Tailor Made - 26 May 2019 01:48

The splits are gone and the hunt is off.

I’m a big fan of sourcing rare wheels, rebuilding then in your living room and making them work. But this time I wanted box-fresh, spanking new and untouched Once I’d gotten over that decision the rest was easy with a call to Comopomotive: I wanted these MLs custom made to the exact specification for the KP: from the PCD (finally the correct 110mm for the car) to mm perfect staggered offsets and beautifully locating centre bore.

Like a Savile Row suite they fit perfectly and, in that one-off anthracite grey, give me all the nostalgic race car look I wanted. It goes without saying they weigh almost nothing and the quality is stunning. I’m over the moon with them.

The catalyst for these new wheels? Well, at the end of last summer I passed the car to a highly recommended painter (while I was on holiday – much more fun than sanding and spraying) to re-paint the bonnet for me (after I’d been having some issues doing it myself and ran out of time) and came back to find the whole car had been resprayed….yep. That happened. With me out of the country they just went ahead and did the whole car! It’s never looked so good and, as sad as it is to admit, my home job just wasn’t cutting it. It looks like glass now and really pops.

I’ve been giving the car a thorough once-over ahead of the 2013 show season and hopefully some sunshine use: from changing the manifold gaskets to rebuilding the brakes, it’s only just back on the ground for the first time in weeks!

2019 Audi R8 revealed with tweaked design and more powe - 16 May 2019 04:13

Tags:

Fresh colour options, such as the Ascari Blue of the car pictured here, and additional 19in or 20in alloy wheel designs also feature, including special forged items for the Performance model. An optional black exterior package brings black badging front and rear, and grey matt and carbon side blades are also available.

Other than some new Alcantara trim, the interior is all but unchanged.

The big news mechanically is the changes to the 5.2-litre V10. ECU and other revisions boost the standard R8 from 533bhp to 562bhp, with torque up by 10lb ft to 406lb ft. The Performance, expected to be the biggest seller, takes it a step further again thanks partly to a new titanium valve train, with power rising from the old V10 Plus’s 603bhp to 611bhp and torque by 4lb ft to 417lb ft.

BaT Auction: 1993 Mitsubishi Delica Star Wagon Turbodie - 13 May 2019 04:09

Tags:

This 1993 Mitsubishi Delica Star Wagon is a right-hand drive Japanese-market example powered by a 2.5-liter turbodiesel inline-four paired with a five-speed manual transmission and 4×4 drive system. The selling dealer imported the van from Japan in early 2019 and has since reconditioned the cosmetics as well as installing Thule roof bars, a Smittybilt platform tent, and four new Pro Comp shocks. Prior service records indicate a timing belt replacement at 96k kilometers. This Delica now shows 106k kilometers (~66k miles) and is offered with pictured accessories, import documents, Japanese-language owner’s books, and a Florida title.

The body is finished in Emerald Green Metallic with contrasting lower cladding, and was recently treated to paint correction by the selling dealer as further detailed on his shop blog. Remaining blemishes include chips on the nose, scratches on the rear corners, and a handful of door dings. A Smittybilt platform tent is mounted on four Thule roof bars, and can be seen open and stored in the gallery below. A window sticker indicates ownership in Nagano Prefecture, Japan prior to US importation.

An extended walk-around video tour can be viewed above. The factory brush guards and accessory side steps were sanded and powder coated in white. The six-lug 15″ wheels were acid dipped, media blasted, refinished in silver, and mounted with new 31″x10.5″ BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A K02 tires. The seller describes tire rub at the front with the suspension at full compression.

The cab features forward controls and engine access from below the passenger seat and center console. Gauges feature a dash-top altimeter and inclinometer as well as a tachometer and a six-digit odometer reading 106k kilometers (~66k miles). The selling dealer reports that the air conditioning compressor was replaced in preparation for the sale. Condensation is noted on the altimeter lens.

Patterned grey fabric covers the seating throughout. The rear cabin features bench seats configurable as a bed or to accommodate up to six additional passengers.

The 2.5-liter 4D56 turbodiesel inline-four pairs drives the rear or all four wheels through a five-speed manual transmission and a transfer case offering high and low ranges. A decal on the timing belt cover indicates replacement at 96k kilometers, and the selling dealer reports that a fluid service has been performed.

Volvo adds snow tires to Canada subscription service - 07 May 2019 02:54

<div readability="35 AR-310189965.jpg<p> <span>At the 12-month point of the 24-month term, a customer can opt to upgrade to another Volvo product, and in doing so reset the two-year term. <em>Photo credit: Volvo</em></span> </p> </div> </div><div readability=" main-image"="" 81.757004830918="" <p="">
Care by Volvo, the brand’s subscription service, is now available in Canada after [https://www.volvocars.com/en-ca/shopping-tools/purchase/care-by-volvo" target="_blank
its website] underwent a soft launch on Oct. 16.

The service allows users to pay a flat monthly fee, which is consistent across Canada, for the use of a Volvo vehicle for 24 months driving up to 15,000 miles per year. The fee, which requires a $500 deposit, includes factory-scheduled maintenance, wear and tear protection, 24-7 Volvo Concierge, roadside assistance, and — in an offering that’s unique to Canada — an included set of winter tires as well as all required tire change service.

Although insurance is included in the monthly fee in the U.S. market, it will not be offered in Canada. Investigating whether it would be possible to offer fairly standard insurance rates was much of the reason for the program's later launch in Canada, but Volvo instead decided to focus on offering consistent pricing from coast to coast.

At the 12-month point of the 24-month term, a customer can opt to upgrade to another Volvo product, and in doing so reset the two-year term. The contract is binding and not transferable.

Volvo says that ordering a vehicle takes less than 10 minutes from a smartphone, and once ready it can be picked up at the dealership of the customer’s choice. Delivery is not yet being offered but is being considered as a future value-add.

At launch, four vehicle configurations will be available. They include the 2020 Volvo S60 sedan in Momentum trim with the Momentum Plus package or in R-Design trim, and the same two trims in the V60 wagon. Both Momentum models are priced at $949 per month, and the R-Design units are $1,049 per month. Customers can select from the full list of exterior colors and from two interior colors on Momentum — the R-Design already comes only with a single interior — but can make no other adjustments.

“You will not be able to choose, but we will equip them really well,” Alex Lvovich, managing director of Volvo Car Canada, explained at a media launch event in Santa Monica, California.
